Moves on dumping
From: NewsTrove.com
"THE federal Government has put the telecommunications industry on notice over internet dumping, saying it will regulate to end the practice if the industry fails to act.
Almost two years after unveiling plans to crack down on dumping, sometimes known as modem-jacking, the Government suggested credit limits for phone accounts as a way of stopping it.
Dumping occurs when dial-up internet users are disconnected from their ISPs and reconnected to an expensive overseas phone number.
The technology is often used as a way of charging for adult content. Users not aware of the charges can end up with large monthly phone bills."
Costly mortgages provoke backlash from borrowers
From: NewsTrove.com
"That last mortgage, from Wells Fargo Financial, a division of Wells Fargo & Co., also came with more than $8,600 in closing costs -- and it placed the St. Paul couple in the middle of a growing backlash against a segment of the mortgage market that has become a mainstay of working-class America.
The Clines complained to the Minnesota Department of Commerce that the lender waited until closing to significantly increase the interest rate, citing new questions about their credit. They later turned around and refinanced with another lender -- at less than half the interest rate."

"The easy answer is there is no limit to the number of times or the frequency you can use IRC 1031 to pyramid your real estate wealth without paying capital gains taxes along the way.
Unlike Internal Revenue Code 121 for selling your principal residence and claiming up to $250,000 tax-free profits (up to $500,000 for a married couple), which can only be used every 24 months, IRC 1031 has no time frequency limitations.
Theoretically, you can buy an investment property shack, fix it up to increase its market value and make a tax-deferred IRC 1031 exchange for a larger run-down shack within a day."

International Forecaster August, 2004 (#3) - Gold, Silver, Economy + More
From: NewsTrove.com
"Persons who want a job, have looked for a job, but are discouraged, were 504,000 in June, up 5.4%. Those who held multiple jobs were 7,521 million, up 2.2% for a rise of only 5.4% from June. Those with both full and part-time jobs were 1.711 million, up a huge 6.0% since June. The ECRI Weekly Leading Index has now been declining for the last six months. Typically, the index leads the economy by eight months. It is not yet signaling a recession, but the clear trend is down and bears repeated watching. Car sales are soft and home delinquency rates are close to record levels. Mortgage refinancing is down dramatically."

"My five-step guide to cutting debt
We are 1 trillion in debt. 1,004,290,000,000 to be exact - almost the same as the nation's Gross Domestic Product. The figure, revealed by the Bank of England, means an average of 16,955 is owed by every man, woman and child.
My overdraft is not that bad, although it's creeping up in that general direction. What amazes me is that however frugal you are, however much effort you put in towards economising, you never seem to get on top of things. Whatever you do to save money does not seem to make a scrap of difference.
Take my cost-cutting measures and the success I've had with them:

CONCORD - It began as an effort to find a new home for the Cabarrus County Fair.
As fast-paced growth in neighboring Charlotte began to drive up the county's population in the 1990s, the former fairgrounds on Cabarrus Avenue just weren't big enough.

Six years and $25 million later, the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center on N.C."

HEADING FOR STAGNATION?
From: NewsTrove.com
"How many billions of dollars shareholders have lost, mainly among the middle class, is unaccountable. And the markets continue to roil with uncertainty.
Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan told the Senate Banking Committee on July 20 that "July seems to be somewhat better even though we are going through a soft patch. . There is no real underlying evidence of any cumulative weakness here."
Since then the Wall Street prophets have contradicted Greenspan. The Aug. 6 Wall Street Journal worried, "The weak job numbers raised the prospect that recent economic weakness is more than just a soft spot as Mr."
