Colwell went to his death voluntarily, having waived his appeals. He could have stopped the execution at any time before the lethal drugs entered his system.
Colwell, in handcuffs, was led into the execution chamber at the Nevada State Prison at 8:52 p.m. from a cell across a hallway where he spent the last hours of his life and where he ate his last meal."

Legislators worry as budget deadline looms
From: www.kypost.com
"FRANKFORT -- Lawmakers scooted out of town Friday without a budget. When they return Monday, only three scheduled days remain in the session for legislative action.
The delay has some legislators who were present in 2002 -- when no budget was enacted -- concerned that a repeat could occur.
In 2002, a stalemate over the public funding of political campaigns kept lawmakers from reaching a consensus, forcing then-Gov. Paul Patton to enact his own spending plan through executive order.
"I'm getting nervous," said Sen. Jack Westwood, R-Crescent Springs, and a member of the Senate budget committee."
Child support collection fees may be limited
From: www.pantagraph.com
"SPRINGFIELD -- Private agencies that track down deadbeat parents to collect overdue child support, sometimes keeping half the money as their fee, may be forced to take a pay cut.
Lawmakers argue the agencies are overcharging single parents who need help. Both the state House and Senate have overwhelmingly passed bills to cap the fees at 35 percent, although neither measure has been sent to the governor yet.
"We certainly want to protect the women that need some help in collection, but we don't want them preyed upon," said Rep. Patricia Bellock, R-Hinsdale, sponsor of one of the bills."
