"WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The free filing program for low-to-middle income taxpayers does not always compute the correct tax amounts, according to a recent report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Software computations were found faulty in situations involving the earned income tax credit, and the child and dependent care credit, among others. Due to a lack of specific data, the report did not include projections for the number of returns affected by errors. "Taxpayers have every reason to question whether they'd be better off with a pencil and an abacus than using the current free file program. Congress and the IRS need to ride herd over the software companies, ensure corrections of flagrant problems, and make this program work," said Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the leading Republican on the Finance Committee, in a statement.
