AmSouth Investment Services will pay a $225,000 fine for failing to adequately protect investors in Mississippi and Alabama.
In doing so, the bank did not admit any wrongdoing.
The investigation focused on former Starkville broker James B. Moorehead, who left AmSouth in 2001 after irregularities were discovered by the company and the Mississippi secretary of state's office.
Moorehead sold an estimated $15.7 million in variable annuities to 217 clients, Secretary of State Eric Clark said Friday in a statement."

Wealthy women in the United States who make investment decisions for their households more often seek guidance from advisers than do men, providing a potential boon for the financial services industry, according to a recent study by Spectrem Group, a Chicago-based consulting firm for the financial services industry.
Among affluent women, those who have at least $500,000 to invest for their families, 70 percent said they relied on financial advisers, compared with 62 percent of men. The survey, of 3,300 households, was conducted last year."
