Lower house prices may hit growth
From: www.thisishull.co.uk
"According to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), the strong economic outlook could cause a sharp correction in house prices.
If prices fell by 20% this would reduce consumer spending growth by up to 2.5% and lower GDP by up to 1.25% in the following year, the group claimed.
The NIESR also predicted that the UK economy would grow at the lower end of Chancellor Gordon Brown's forecasts.
It said that the economy would grow by 3% this year and by 2.8% in 2005, compared with Mr Brown's predictions of growth of 3% to 3.5% this year."
Letters to the Editor
From: www.tulareadvanceregister.com
"Heritage development: County residents are given too much power
After a recent meeting, I am convinced that the Tulare Planning Commission has no backbone, nor do they adhere to good planning practices.
That night, a 77-year-old property owner wanted to zone her property in accordance with the general plan that was laid out years ago. Based on the estimated population of that general plan, our city located two -- not one, but two -- schools in the Prosperity Avenue and E Street area and created some open spaces between the school and a new softball complex.
This was truly visionary and good planning."
eTaiwanNews.com/Strong economy backs reform push
From: www.etaiwannews.com
"The recent upward revisions to Taiwan's economic growth forecasts by the World Bank and Taiwan Institute for Economic Research to 5.1 percent and 5.08 percent respectively, should boost confidence in the prospects for development over the first year of President Chen Shui-bian's second four-year-term.
The two forecasts also stand as an affirmation of the efforts made by the Democratic Progressive Party government during its first term.
The TIER stated that it raised its forecast due to expectations that industrial production, merchandise exports and the performance of the Taipei stock market would continue to improve."
Bahrain's services role faces challenge

Bahrain's services role faces challenge
With unemployment among its 400,000 workforce at more than 15 per cent, Bahrain is facing strong challenges as it struggles to maintain its position as a major regional centre for financial services, foreign investment and tourism.
Nevertheless the sound management of Bahrain's economy was recognised last year by Standard & Poor's rating of Bahrain on a par with Qatar. Fitch similarly raised the island's rating to A status.
Producing only about 35,000 b/d of oil on its own account, Bahrain's economy depends on industrial growth."
Egypt counts the costs of war
From: www.gulfbusiness.com
"ME Economics
Egypt counts the costs of war
Egypt is the Middle East's largest economy outside the Gulf and with almost 70 million people it has the largest population of the Arab World. Consistent growth has proved elusive.
The country has endured five lacklustre years and a recession in the tourism industry, the country's main hard currency earner, during which time foreign reserves fell from a peak of $20 billion in 1997 to $14 billion at the end of last year."
