The reason? Proponents say there's simply no other such ready source for the billions of dollars needed to balance the school-finance budget while bringing tens of thousands of new jobs to Texas.
"When you're talking about raising the amount of money we are, there are only so many choices," said Mike Toomey, Gov. Rick Perry's chief of staff. "This one is better than others."
1st piece of Senate school bill: education incentives

"The Texas Senate began building a school finance and property tax repair bill piece by piece Monday, starting with a short bill that concentrated on the education side of things and had nary a mention of taxes in it.
As the week goes on, the hope is to add the more controversial elements: giving the share-the-wealth plan a makeover or a ticket out of Texas, cutting some taxes, raising others. By Thursday or so, senators hope to have a completed bill.
What was clear Monday was that the Senate had mostly gotten over its general pique at the House for sending it an underfunded mishmash of legislation last week."

"The special session on school finance and taxation that spawned all those failed plans passed into history Monday. And with no obvious prospect of legislative cohesion in sight, Gov. Rick Perry agreed with Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Tom Craddick that chaining lawmakers to their desks for an immediate second 30-day special session would not be a productive exercise.
But Perry, Dewhurst and Craddick will continue to seek a solution in the traditional governmental fashion, by forming a committee. Or, in this case, two committees."

Pete Rose, who has battled the IRS as much as Major League Baseball since he was banned for life from the sport 15 years ago, owes $973,693.28 in back taxes accumulated from 1997 to 2002, according to an IRS document filed to the Broward County (Fla.) public records and recorded on Tuesday.
