Plan could double North Texas toll roads
From: NewsTrove.com
"By TONY HARTZEL / The Dallas Morning News
A state plan to raise money by converting existing or planned highways
to pay-as-you-drive routes could nearly double North Texas' toll road
network in the next few years.
And that politically charged proposition is either a godsend for areas
in need of more highway dollars or a boondoggle that will force
motorists to pay tolls that would fund projects that they may never use.
"It's a way to raise money, and the money comes right back here," said
Denton County Judge Mary Horn, whose county is considering tolls along
State Highway 121."
Hope, again, for Phillipsburg tract
From: NewsTrove.com
"Phillipsburg's long struggle to redevelop a decrepit industrial complex is back on track after taking a surprising turn this summer.
Ingersoll-Rand Co. decided to sell the 388-acre property, severing its long ties to the working-class New Jersey river town that, over the course of a century, it almost single-handedly built up.
Under the threat of eminent domain, Ingersoll-Rand persuaded town officials last year that it was serious about finding new tenants for its old home. But after making little progress, the Fortune 500 company apparently came to the conclusion that it was ill-suited to the commercial real estate business."
Daily Press: If you don't like higher assessments, suggest a solution
From: NewsTrove.com
"It's amusing when Jay Leno goes out on the street for his "Jaywalking" segment and demonstrates how little the general public knows about their government and the people who run it.
People are apparently chosen at random, and he rarely finds anyone who can name any of the leaders in government - up to and including the president. And forget about asking how government works.
It's not nearly so amusing when, right here on the Peninsula, I find people applying that same level of ignorance to their daily interactions with government - particularly local government.
But in what has become an annual demonstration of (could it be willful?"
Surplus to benefit transportation
From: NewsTrove.com
"In announcing the surplus last month, Warner said that most of the money would be set aside for the Rainy Day Fund and that 10 percent would go toward the Water Quality Improvement Fund, as required by law.
The rest of the money, he said, would be used to maintain state buildings, to pay for lingering cleanup costs from Hurricane Isabel, and for the Transportation Trust Fund.
"He recognizes that we don't have a long-term fiscally sound plan to continue to build and maintain our transportation network," Qualls said Saturday. Warner has not said how the road money would be used."
