Republicans missing the mark with borrow-and-spend habit
I always heard that a liberal was a tax-and-spend Democrat. In the last four years of Republican leadership, our government has cut taxes, so that means they are conservative, right? Well, how do they pay for their record spending? They borrow and spend. Vice President Dick Cheney says the national debt doesn't matter. He's right. It doesn't matter to him. He and President Bush will probably be re-elected because they cut taxes. The only problem is, interest rates are beginning to rise, because government borrowing is competing with private borrowing."
EU warns against unilateral petrol tax cuts

The European Commission warned EU member states Monday that they cannot unilaterally cut taxes on petrol, underlining an EU accord to consult each other in any response to soaring oil prices.
EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said that EU finance ministers agreed in June that "measures which would be adopted by member states concerning petrol taxes must be subject to prior consultation."
"No country can take unilateral measures without prior consultations in the ecofin," he said, using EU jargon for the regular monthly meeting of EU finance ministers."
