Reno officials approve tax rebates for builder

"The Reno City Council on Wednesday agreed to give a developer $10 million in sales tax rebates to cover the cost of infrastructure improvements needed for a high-end mall planned for Mount Rose Highway and South Virginia Street.
The city's deal with Birmingham, Ala.-based Bayer Properties will give the developer half of the sales-tax revenue its project generates - as much as $10 million or until the deal expires. The rebates are dependent on the city's sales tax revenue growing by 2 percent a year, and the length of the deal is not yet set."

SOME delegates to the national conference on labour and social security have urged the Government to exempt pensioners from paying tax which they say is currently too high.
African Life chief executive officer Muna Hantuba said the current tax regime was not favourable as pensioners were taxed heavily on their benefits, making them become destitute.
Mr Hantuba, who was presenting a paper at the conference at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka yesterday, said '"there should be tax benefits to those that are retiring but nothing at the moment is forthcoming."

The number of workers who earned more than 80 million won (about $67,000) a year jumped to 28,000 in 2002, accounting for 0.4 percent of the total workforce, according to a National Assembly report. The figure was 7,000, or 0.1 percent, in 1996 before the financial crisis hit Korea.
Those with a taxable income of 40 to 80 million won also increased to 127,000 people, or 2.1 percent of the total, from 50,000 (0.7 percent) during the same period. The number of workers earning between 10 and 40 million won rose to 1.94 million (31.5 percent) in 2002 from 1.57 million (22.7 percent) six years ago."
