"JACKSON HOLE, Wyo., Aug. 27 - The chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Alan Greenspan, warned on Friday that the federal government might have to scale back promises to the elderly in programs like Social Security and Medicare.
"As a nation, we owe it to our retirees to promise only the benefits that can be delivered," Mr. Greenspan told a conference here sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
"If we have promised more than our economy has the ability to deliver to retirees without unduly diminishing real income gains of workers, as I fear we may have, we must recalibrate our programs," he said.

"BRIDGEPORT - This city, struggling with the highest property taxes in the nation and recovering from a corruption scandal, is proposing to buy a vacant downtown building from a politically connected family by forgiving millions of dollars in back taxes.
The Paniccia family owes about $2.4 million in taxes to the city and others dating back a decade. While they haven't paid taxes since 1994, they have contributed to the campaign of Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi, records show.
The proposal - which would cost the city more than double the value of the property based on one appraisal - is sparking accusations of a sweetheart deal."
