RALEIGH, N.C. - In a slap to Democratic Gov. Mike Easley, a state association representing more than 50,000 state workers and retirees is endorsing a Republican for governor for the first time.
The Employees Political Action Committee, part of the State Employees Association of North Carolina, is endorsing GOP nominee Patrick Ballantine, executive director Dana Cope said Tuesday.
Cope said Easley's 2001 decision to use $130 million from a trust fund for the state employees' retirement system to help balance the state's budget played into the group's decision not to endorse the Democrat for a second term."
