Fulton schools tax levy set, tax bills could decrease by Andrew Henderson
From: NewsTrove.com

"Residents of the Fulton City School District might be surprised when they receive their school tax bills this month. They could actually see a decrease in their school-tax bills. The Fulton Board of Education finalized the $15,126,980 tax levy for the 2004-2005 school year during last week's meeting. The tax levy is the same as last year's levy. In 2002, the tax levy was at $14,459,531. Residents could see a decrease in taxes because while the tax levy remains the same assessments have increased in the district. "The assessments are up for the district," said Director of Finance David Gleason."

Where's the budget?
From: NewsTrove.com

"According to County Administrator Steve Lyman, the budget is still in the making because department heads are still submitting their budget requests. Reviews of those requests will reportedly begin soon, with a preliminary budget targeted for Oct. 9. The legislature's standing committees will review the numbers throughout Occtober and early November. Lyman noted, however, that legislators will still face a challenge in approving a spending plan. "It is fair to say the constraints facing the county are unchanged," he said. "It will be difficult, as in the past couple years." After the 2002 county budget contained a modest 3."

Don Lobo's Individual Declaration of Independence
From: NewsTrove.com

"Preliminary Statement to the Individual Declaration of Independence The following is an Individual Declaration of Independence. When I undertook its writing, I had intended to copy only the general form of Thomas Jefferson's wonderful piece, to borrow from its stature. But in getting into it, I found that almost ALL of TJ's grievances apply to our current tyrants, only ours are much more shameless, confiscatory, and murderous. So I've kept 80% of what he wrote, updating the content (only a little of which didn't apply as written) but leaving the unique spiciness of the original style."

Council hopefuls discuss police pay raises
From: NewsTrove.com

"mdunne@theadvocate.comAdvocate staff writer Vocal police officers who have been campaigning for a pay raise are expected to challenge the next Metro Council to develop a plan to compensate them on a level equal to the national average. John Gonzales, vice president of the Baton Rouge Union of Police said, "The union will continue to be vocal" until it sees a pay plan that boosts them to the national average. He said council candidates continue to tell the union "public safety is a top priority and pay is an issue, but we've been told that before."

DallasNews.com | News for Dallas, Texas | Business Columnist Pamela Yip
From: NewsTrove.com

"A key part of President Bush's re-election strategy is promoting an "ownership society" in which Americans are more in charge of their financial lives. "Ownership brings security and dignity and independence," Mr. Bush said in his acceptance speech last week at the Republican National Convention. The goal is to wean Americans from being dependent on government to becoming owners of their own security, including homeownership, retirement savings and health care dollars. Are Americans ready for such stewardship? I'd like to think that many are, given the history of this country."
