: OK, perhaps MSN Money isn't on the same level as The Economist or Alan Greenspan, but the writer makes some interesting points.
: If you're counting on SS for your retirement income, you might want to cut your assumptions by 10% and consider investing a higher % in stock mutual funds (or whatever has a higher return over the next few decades)."

"East Chicago city officials discovered Wednesday they owe the county more than
$3 million in tax money they have already spent.
The news came two days after Mayor Robert Pastrick announced 4 percent pay raises in 2005 for municipal employees.
The county advanced East Chicago $3,121,504 more than was collected in the city for the 2002 property taxes, according to Auditor's office tax distribution records.
East Chicago City Controller Ed Maldonado said the city expected to receive more than 90 percent of the $86,112,449 due in personal and real estate taxes for 2002.
In the end, only 80 percent - $69,233,543 - came in, records state."

"Under the current Social Security system, most workers lose control of 10.6 percent of their wages. About 80 percent of Americans, mostly low and moderate-income earners, pay more in payroll taxes than they do in federal income taxes.
The system disproportionately cuts the income of low-wage workers. Worse, since it restricts their ability to save, it helps to keep poor people poor.
Today's Social Security system further hurts poor people by paying them, in their retirement years, a low rate of return on the investment they are forced to make all those years."
Judge John Dietz's remarks
From: NewsTrove.com
"I have kept this yellow sticky on my computer monitor and it is a quote
from Edgewood IV, it says: "The people of Texas have themselves set the
standards for their schools. The court's responsibility is to decide
whether that standard has been satisfied, not to judge the wisdom of the
policy choices of the Legislature, or to impose a different policy of
our choosing." To the best of my ability, I have tried to follow the
Supreme Court's admonition of judicial restraint.
Texas has experienced phenomenal growth of population over the past
decade and a half. We are now the second most populous state in the
country."
