"WEAKER CORPORATE TAX PAYMENTS
The estimate for income tax collections is available for 2003, and it speaks of a substantial rise in collections of $152 mn to $736 mn, a 26% expansion; data on the top 500 taxpayers point to a 27% growth. That looks very positive.
Yet, behind those figures, we find that there was a substantial increase in taxes caused by oil companies, that crowded the top of the chart. If we look at taxpayers 101 through 500, we find their taxes grow a bare 2.6% over the 101 through 500 of a year before. Both manufacturing and commerce pay less taxes than in 2002."
Taxpayer's suit still on
From: NewsTrove.com
"By Kimball Perry
Post staff reporter
A judge Friday declined to throw out a taxpayer's request to have Hamilton County Prosecutor Mike Allen removed from office, even as the taxpayer privately told Allen's lawyers she would be satisfied if Allen stepped down -- with pay -- for his final 3 months in office.
Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas Crush declined Groesbeck resident Carrie Davis's request to remove Allen immediately from office because of Allen's admission of his extramarital affair with Rebecca Collins, an employee in Allen's office."
Craddick stands pat on taxes
From: NewsTrove.com
"AUSTIN — In the wake of a judge's warning to state leaders to change
Texas' school funding system, House Speaker Tom Craddick this week
reaffirmed his preference for a broad-based business tax that would cut
the share of education funding paid for by local property taxes.
That got no immediate support Friday from Gov. Rick Perry, who has
opposed the idea.
"Each of us are paying property taxes that are funding those schools,
and they've gone out of sight. They're too high," Craddick told the
Texas Farm Bureau on Thursday."
City tax pledge is a mirage

"City tax pledge is a mirage
Regarding "City pledges services without new taxes":
North Port residents might well be suspicious because the article notes that their city budget will be 23 percent higher than this year's. The story says, "North Port is banking on growth to pay for a 2005 budget that's all about hiring new employees."
But then the article clarifies the lead by admitting that current homeowners and business-property owners will pay most of the new taxes. "Property values have gone up, which means taxable (resources) have gone up, which means revenues have gone up to cover a good part of that," a city official notes."

With no discussion among board members or comments from the public, the Anderson Community Schools board on Tuesday approved an $88.1 million budget for 2005.
The budget will increase the property tax rate by an estimated 20 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
The projected property tax for ACS is expected to climb from $1.3271 per $100 of assessed valuation to $1.5272 in 2005. Most of the increase is to pay off the bonds for the renovation of the two high schools and construction of the Anderson Elementary School."
