Northwest Indiana News: nwitimes.com - Opinion
From: NewsTrove.com
"Our opinion: Taxing the money-making aspects of nonprofit organizations is proper.
For the first time, the Center for Visual and Performing Arts will be paying property taxes. Thanks to the diligence of two county employees, the popular center in Munster is now required to pay taxes on the catering portion of its facility, Lake County's Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals ruled last week.
That could mean as much as $30,000 a year for the county coffers. The county is taxing 16 percent of the center's assessed value, dating back to 2000."

"Kernan tax cap plan does not benefit all homeowners, including her
Letter to the Editor
Rosa Oliver
Whiting
My property tax bill went up from $1,000 to $8,000. From what I understand, the tax cap will not help those who did not have the homestead exemption.
I find this to be another unconstitutional act by Gov. Joe Kernan since only certain homeowners will benefit. How is it that Kernan can install this cap but not find a way to include all homeowners?
I have lived in my home for 21 years and was never advised I was eligible for this homestead benefit."
Trash fee plan is called unfair
From: NewsTrove.com
"Since 1993, Ross and every other homeowner in Schenectady has seen the city's property tax rate skyrocket by 121 percent. The most unkind cut of all may have come on Tuesday when first-year Mayor Brian U. Stratton unveiled his first proposed budget, a $63.5 million spending plan that increases taxes by 6.9 percent and carries a new residential trash fee.
Under Stratton's plan, the owners of single-family homes would pay an extra $131 for trash collection. The owners of two- and three-family homes would be hit with an extra $232 and $363, respectively.
Without the trash fee, Ross's city tax bill would be $793.73, $51."
His empire on the lake
From: NewsTrove.com
"Thomason exploited a state law that created little-understood but increasingly common community development districts.
Community development districts created by developers operate like independent governments and can borrow millions tax-free to pay for roads, utilities and amenities. Homeowners in the development pay off the debt.
Although much of the taxing authority shifts from the developer to homeowners after six years, a loophole in state law allows the developer to hold on to power much longer.
That helps explain why, after 13 years, Cory Lake Isles and its 300 homeowners remain under the absolute control of Gene Thomason."
