In May, Harvey Levinson, chairman of Nassau County's Board of Assessors, announced that he would begin to reclassify homes suspected of containing unlawful apartments from residences to commercial boarding houses, leading to a much higher tax rate. He hoped, he said, to end the profitability and therefore the growth of illegal conversions, buildings that hold more families than is permitted by local zoning laws."

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
From: NewsTrove.com
"As I live, I will never as long forget the sound of the smoke alarm that woke me in the early morning hours of Sept. 26. I am alive -- minus the total loss of everything in the house fire -- because of that smoke alarm.
The outpouring support from the community, including Mount Vernon Fire Company, Salisbury Moose Lodge, The Ruritan Club, Michael P. Cooper Memorial Fund, family and friends and anonymous donors has been overwhelming.
It was because of the donations collected for me from the second "Labor Day for Jaye" in memory of my uncle, Jaye Price, that I can begin a future, but it was because of the smoke alarm that I have a future."

"The budget's $9,742,28 expenditures total will be offset by the $9,808,115 revenue budget passed by city council members. There was no public comment regarding the budget.
"With the $9.7 million budget, less than eight percent is coming from revenue generated from property taxes," said Mayor Larry Bonderud. "We've generated so much income outside of property taxes that we're decreasing our reliance on property taxes to fund city functions. This is a continued step in that direction."
The council passed Resolution 1629, which adopted the city's budget with a tax levy of 169.99 mils for the year, compared to last year's mil levy of 166.44."
