Report: Milwaukee lags in per-person spending

"The report compares spending in Milwaukee to nine similar cities and ranks Milwaukee seventh in annual per-person spending. The Milwaukee number of $1,307 is $188 less than the average for the cities looked at in the report.
In Milwaukee, about a quarter of all spending comes from the property tax, compared to an average of 11% for the other cities, in part because some cities have local income or sales taxes.
The council's Finance and Personnel Committee begins reviewing Mayor Tom Barrett's 2005 budget today and will face the annual question of how much taxpayers pay and what services they get."

City council is sticking by its zero tolerance for late payment of taxes.
Dora Renner of Renner Road still has to pay her 10 per cent late penalty charges of $94.45 despite the fact she ended up in hospital on June 8, 2004 for emergency cancer treatment in Kelowna.
In a letter to council Renner said she had a trach installed in her throat so she couldn't talk to tell her son in Smithers how to access her bank account.
"To be able to access my bank account, my son had to get authorization and a new activation code from the bank before he could pay my bills."

"The Daily Times has reported accurately the absurd state of landlord licensing and inspection of rental units in the City of Salisbury.
However, a recent editorial comment that the mayor and City Council "did the right thing" in adopting legislation on these matters is misleading, and the discussion is incomplete.
Last year, the former City Council passed an ordinance requiring landlords pay a license fee sufficient to fund inspection of all rental units within a period of several years. It would have required such inspections.
That legislation was sponsored by the most public-spirited official in Salisbury in recent years, C. T."
